According to a statement by Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) spokesperson Henry Kapata, the upgrade of the power transmission line from Kafue to Livingstone will start in Q2 2015 and is expected to be completed in 2016.

The project will include a new substation in Livingstone, increasing the energy supply in the southern corridor and reducing congestion on the interconnected transmission system in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The upgrade valued at USD 100 million is financed by Zesco with the support of the World Bank, the European Investment Bank and the Government of Zambia.

According to the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA), the demand for electricity in the country has been growing at an average of about 3%, or between 150 and 200 MW each year and is expected to exceed 2,000 MW in 2015.

Zambia total installed Electricity Generation Capacity is 2,347 MW.
