Connecting Project Destination Port Feasibility Status Strategic Framing
Zambia-Lobito Railway Project Lobito, Angola First draft completed Western transport corridor

Zambia has signed a concession agreement for the Zambia-Lobito Railway Project, which will connect Zambia to the Angolan port of Lobito, with the first draft of the feasibility study completed and environmental and social studies, contractor selection and capital raising underway.

Together with the TAZARA railway running east to Tanzania, the government frames the Lobito project as positioning Zambia as a transport hub connecting the east and west coasts of Africa.

The Zambia-Lobito Railway Project

Zambia has signed a concession agreement for the Zambia-Lobito Railway Project, which will connect Zambia to the port of Lobito in Angola[1]. The first draft of the feasibility study has been completed, and environmental and social studies, contractor selection and capital raising are underway[1].

Strategic Positioning

The 2026 Budget Speech framed the Lobito project together with the TAZARA revitalisation as making Zambia’s ambition of being a transport hub connecting the east and west coasts of Africa a reality within a few years[1].

Investment Opportunities

The Lobito project’s earlier stage, still raising capital and selecting a contractor compared with the already-concessioned TAZARA line, represents a west-coast corridor opportunity yet to be fully allocated, relevant to infrastructure investors and contractors, detailed further alongside TAZARA on the dedicated Transport page[1].
