According to Zambia Vice President Guy Scott, the price of mealie-meal will drop as a surplus of Zambia maize begins to enter the market.
Speaking to Parliament, Dr. Scott indicated that the recent high price of mealie meal is attributable to shortages from last year and prices have been fluctuating since 2008.
Dr. Scott went on to reference the historical drop in the price of mealie meal in 2012 as a result of the 2011 maize surplus entering the market.
According to Dr. Scott, Zambia mealie meal prices were not as high as they have been portrayed and based on the results of a Government of Zambia funded survey with the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflections (JCTR), mealie-meal prices in most parts of Zambia are currently below ZMK 70.
In 2014, the surplus production of Zambia maize is estimated to have reached 3.9 million metric tons.
