Zambia and Sweden marked the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025, with senior officials from both governments meeting in Stockholm to advance bilateral cooperation in climate resilience, digital innovation, sustainable energy and economic development.

Discussions centred on Sweden’s newly launched Africa Strategy 2024-2028, which includes a commitment to development assistance for Zambia, alongside a signed memorandum of understanding on bilateral climate cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

Bilateral Cooperation and the 60th Anniversary

Zambian officials, including the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development, held high-level meetings with Swedish government officials in Stockholm, focused on advancing bilateral cooperation in climate resilience, digital innovation, sustainable energy and economic development[1]. Both countries committed to marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025 through joint initiatives including cultural exchanges, policy forums, and sustainability and climate resilience projects[1].

Sweden’s Africa Strategy and Climate Cooperation

A central focus of the discussions was Sweden’s newly launched Africa Strategy for 2024-2028, which includes a commitment to development assistance to Zambia, with Zambian officials highlighting the potential for expanded partnerships in renewable energy as the country transitions to sustainable energy sources[1]. Sweden and Zambia have separately signed a memorandum of understanding for bilateral climate cooperation under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, covering carbon credit collaboration[1].

Investment Opportunities

Sweden’s Africa Strategy commitment and its Article 6 climate cooperation agreement both point to renewable energy and carbon markets as the areas where Swedish development finance and private investment are most likely to flow into Zambia, complementing the country’s own energy diversification agenda detailed on the dedicated Energy page[1].
