World Economic Forum Ranks Zambia 8th Most Competitive Sub-Saharan Economy

In its latest edition of The Global Competitiveness 2014-2015 released on September 3rd 2014, The World Economic Forum (WEF) ranked Zambia among the 10 most competitive countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The report ranks Zambia as the 8th most competitive economy out of 33 Sub-Saharan African countries analyzed.

Zambia ranked 96th out of 144 countries covered by WEF’s report.

The report highlights Sub-Saharan Africa’s persistence in growth amid the economic downturn the rest of the World suffered in recent years, registering “impressive growth rates of close to 5% in 2013 – with rising projections for the next two years – below only emerging and developing Asia”.

In 2013 Zambia GDP was USD 22.38 billion.

Zambia GDP grew by 6.4 % between 2012 and 2013.

WEF ranks each country’s competitiveness using 12 factors :Institutions, Infrastructure, Macroeconomic environment, Health and primary education, Higher education and training, Goods market efficiency, Labor market efficiency, Financial market development, Technological readiness, Market size, as well as Business sophistication and Innovation.

The AfDB African Economic Outlook 2026 revised Zambia's GDP growth to 3.8% in 2025, down from an initial 5.2% estimate, due to underperformance in ICT, trade, and finance, with inflation declining to 14.0% and public debt dropping to 87.6% of GDP following debt restructuring. Growth is projected to recover to 5.0% in 2026 and 6.3% in 2027, driven by mining, agriculture, and energy recovery, with inflation easing to 9.3% in 2026 and the current account swinging to a surplus of 0.8% of GDP on higher copper export earnings.

IMF Completes Sixth Review of Zambia Extended Credit Facility, Approves USD 190 million with GDP Growth Projected at 5.8% and Inflation at 9.3% in 2026

The International Monetary Fund has completed the sixth and final review of Zambia’s Extended Credit Facility, approving a USD 190 million disbursement and bringing total programme support to USD 1.7 billion. The Fund estimates GDP growth at 5.2% in 2025, driven by strong mining activity and record maize production, and projects growth of 5.8% in 2026, supported by improved electricity generation and continued expansion in mining and services, while inflation is projected to decline to 9.3%.
