On September 4th 2014, the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) announced that Zambia has the resources and capacity to feed the entire Southern African region.
The announcement was made by a SADC delegation touring Zambeef Products PLC (ZAMBEEF:LUSE) operations in Chisamba, Zambia.
The group was composed of 35 Southern African Parliamentarians from the SADC Public Accounts Committee, touring Zambeef’s operations at Huntley Farm, and inspecting the company’s feedlot, flour mill, cropping operations and dairy farm.
The SADC delegation took into account Zambia’s endowment in natural resources such as water and land, as Zambia comprises 40% of Southern and Central Africa’s water resources on its own, as well as a 75 million hectares territory, of which only 15% of the arable land is currently cultivated.
Chairman of the SADC Public Accounts Committee Hon. Thulisile Dladla MP said “The African Union is trying to remove the economic boundaries that exist so Zambia will be capable of feeding all of us. South Africa has been feeding us, but Zambia can also feed the region”.
