Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) seeks public private partnerships (PPPs) for manufacturing railway sleepers, as reliable supply remains a challenge for the company.
At present ZRL has to import railway sleepers from South Africa at a much higher cost.
According to the CEO of ZRL Muyenga Atanga “ZRL actually needs 665,000 railways sleepers for the Livingstone and Kitwe mainline where at present the installed sleepers are only 279,000.”
ZRL thus is scouting for investors to venture in a PPP arrangement to produce their own sleeper and reduce high importation cost.
The value of this project is still being discussed. To recapitalize the Zambian parastatal railway, an estimated USD 2 billion investment will be needed.
